The school is way too small, a big complaint, and there's really nothing for the students to do in such a small town if you do not have a car on campus. So over all the place is really suffocating. Being a four year residential college, there is the chance to make meaningful relationships and Denison does a great job of easing the college transition for first years (e.g: June-O, Pre-O, Aug-O, First Year Council). Diversity is there if you want to embrace it. Take it from me, a senior who has seen it all, Denison University has a lot going on! From the student perspective, it can't all be perfect, can it? My first year I was in a freshman only dorm (a practice at Denison), which was great because I got to know a lot of the members of my class. Professors really do care about your academic standing and go out of their way to help you in any way possible. Biggest controversy was the racial, sexist, homophobic and social issues that occurred during November of 2007. You will get individual, constructive feedback. The housing lottery is a little bit of a nightmare (which is why I gave housing 4 instead 5 stars), although they are getting better. The social scene is not cliquey, and Denisonians are encouraged to try different clubs and activities. But I gave it 3 stars based on only the dining hall food. Though our body has issues with race and sexuality. Our professors are true mentors, and our innovative academic programs prepare students for the world that awaits them. Myself, as a white male, made more friends from more areas and dispositions than I could have ever imagined before going to the school. Although no one is really familiar with the small liberal arts Denison University, I have found that attending this small school has been fantastic. If you are the kind of person who likes to hop on the subway around a city Denison is definitely not the right college for you. For me it happened during sophomore year, when I had a lot of emotional, family, health, and roommate issues. I have never been around such friendly people before and the academics are challenging but very manageable. Other than clubs, Denison also has a movie night tradition, where we screen recently released films out on the commons. Talk to your current teachers and other older adults as much as possible about both intellectual and non-academic subjects, as that will help to prepare you for the relationships that you will indubitably have once you get here. The entire campus came together and listened to one another- which was extremely powerful. Music department lets you play without being a music major. They class sizes are small having no more than 25 people in a single class. Pros: This school isn't perfect. There is a lot of school pride in varied situations, especially lacrosse games and often times soccer games as well. The campus is pretty, but it's on a big hill so it's windy as hell up there. I love what I learned there and how I learned it, through experience and in the classroom, and what kind of a person I have become as a result, a thoughtful, questioning, and understanding person who can converse intelligently about anything and handle any life circumstance with grace.
